Name day Print E-mail

People from the older generation on Crete sometimes even don't know their exact birthday unless they needed the birth certificate for anything, as Cretans grew up with only celebrating a name day. This tradition has changed in so far, that children today celebrate their birthdays. But adults again mainly celebrate their name days instead. There's a running gag on the names of Iannis and Jorgos, because it is said that half of the Cretan's here are named Iannis and the other half Jorgos, so there are many celebrations on these two name days every year.
