Bring your own bike or rent a bike in our neighbor village Sivas.
You can either go on a big cruise around the islands or take some small boat-trips. From Matala there are daily cruises offering nice boat trips along the beautiful South coast. They pass lonely beaches, stop in a cave and have a break in Agiofarango, Vathy or Kali Limenes. From Agia Galini small daily ship cruises are available to Agios Pavlos, marine caves, Paximadia islands,etc. Some of the main destinations are the famous beach of Preveli, the beautiful beach of Agiofarango and the peaceful Paximadia islands.
There's a small camel farm on your right on the road to Kalamaki. Have a look around or try to ride a camel – referring to the ancient meaning of "Kamilaris" (the one who rides a camel).
There's a very small cinema in Mires and two cinema complexes in Heraklion.
There are several places for climbing and peaks for rock climbing in the area, especially in the Asteroussia mountains. Check out the page climbincrete. They have excellent information on climbing and mountaineering on the island. The area of the Asteroussia is one of the most popular areas for climbing, particularly the stunning cliffs around Kapetaniana and Mt. Kofinas on the southern flanks of the mountain range.

The closest diving opportunity can be found in Lendas.
There are many beautiful fishing areas around Kalamaki and Kokkinos Pirgos as well as in Kali Limenes.

There is a tour guide in Kamilari, who offers guided day trips, safari tours or hiking trips in the area. Ask your host for directions.
There are several walks of short or longer distance in the area of Kamilari, Messara and prefecture Heraklion. Have a look for some of the nice little hikes around Kamilari or for longer walks and hikes in the area or through some gorges. There are also quite sportive hikes and climbing opportunities for example day walks on the Psiloritis top or to the Kamares Cave.
In Pitsidia is a farm offering horse-riding. It's run by a Greek/ German family.
There's a go-kart arena close to Mires (exit in the direction of Pombia).

The beaches are the most natural places, where you can enjoy very nice swimming conditions in the clear Lybian Sea. Those who prefer public pools can find one in Kalamaki and another one in Timbaki.
As the water on the South coast of Crete is crystal clear nearly everywhere, there are many beautiful places for snorkeling. You will find most fishes and interesting places around rocks in the water. (South end of Komos beach, Kali Limenes, Vathy, etc.)
There's one tennis ground in Mires and Agia Galini.
There's a beautiful winery on top of the hill "Orthi Petra" at an altitude of 500 metres, north of ancient Gortina, next to the village Plouti. They offer biological wines, tastings and guides from April until October (Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00).
